I was going to put this in chat, but it's more of a competition... One that great minds have been pondering for at least a century. If you don;t know what a Vacuum Balloon is, it's basically a container that can withstand the forces of a vacuum inside while being lighter than an equal area of air.

If you can achieve it (no one has) this container will float in the air similarly to a helium or hydrogen filled balloon without the associated costs and being able to regulate buoyancy in a zeppelin adaptation:

I love steampunk Smile

Anyway, this target is tantalizingly close for scientists and modern materials; but I'm certain there are ways that no one has even considered... Personally I'm thinking electrostatics. But the goal is clear, displace a cubic metre of air at sea level in a structure that weighs less than 1.275Kg and you've done it.

Fame and fortune made easy Laughing

There are reasons zeppelins arn't around anymore. And now this vacuum rubbish. Actually my brain just can't fathom having something lighter than air that's that big.

Just like I don't understand in the slightest how plants do anything without a brain.

What is it that plants do exactly? I don't have to think about my nails growing for it to happen- it just does... What I don't understand is how Christopher Reeve could apparently get an erection.

I've got to tell you I'm fascinated with the whole lighter than air concept... Coincidentally I've got a rigid structure for an airship of sorts right outside the house... I was going to finish it today but I bought the wrong materials so it's back to the shop tomorrow... again (sigh).

Even now I'm not sure how I'm going to put the thing together but I'm certain it'll be done either tomorrow or the next day... It's not like I'm following directions or anything, as far as I know this thing has never been done and despite the naysayers I've spoken to, hypothetically it should work... Unlike a Vacuum balloon, there's no physical way it can be done, air is just too thin.

We shall see.
